5 things to do this week in Marin, from Bill Maher to muscle cars – Marin Independent Journal
May the good times roll in Marin this week. From an Oktoberfest celebration to a Bill Maher comedy show to a car and motorcycle show, here are some of the must-see events happening in our county.
Political humor
Whether he’s performing comedy on stage or in his long-running talk show, “Real Time with Bill Maher,” Bill Maher’s political humor stares at the world today. And boy, does he have a lot to say these days. Have fun with the Los Angeles comedian during his new comedy show at 8 p.m. Saturday at the Marin Veterans’ Memorial Auditorium at 10 Avenue of the Flags in San Rafael. Tickets are $ 61.75 to $ 321.75. Proof of vaccination and mandatory masks. For more information and to obtain tickets, visit tickets.marincenter.org.
Inside the box ‘
Sitting in a cramped, symbolic 4-by-6-foot prison cell, learn about the psychological horrors of solitary confinement to which people are routinely subjected in American prisons in “The Box” by Marin Shakespeare Company. Sarah Shourd’s poignant play, the result of a three-year investigation by Shourd into solitary confinement in US prisons as well as her own experience of being held by Iran in solitary confinement for 410 days, has given its extended duration. It continues from Friday to Sunday outdoors at the Forest Meadows Amphitheater at the Dominican University in San Rafael.
“After my own imprisonment, when I returned to the United States, I was truly shocked to find that solitary confinement is used so regularly and on such a large scale in our prisons,” Shourd told the IJ. early this month. “And that this is in many ways the control mechanism that makes this mass incarceration possible – that we couldn’t store so many people without torturing them.”
Proof of vaccination or recent negative COVID-19 test required. Wearing a mask is also compulsory for participants. Tickets are $ 40 for each 7:30 pm show. Get tickets and more information at marinhakespeare.org.
Prost!

The event will feature traditional music, dancing, food, imported beer, games and a cornhole tournament. Masks recommended. Tickets are $ 10 to $ 20. Get them in advance at 415-388-6393 or at the door. For more information, visit tamcsd.org.
Dance the
When Marin resident Casey Lee Thorne founded Inside Out Contemporary Ballet in 2012, she wanted it to re-image ballet, rooting their work in interdisciplinary collaboration, dance advocacy, and community development. And over the years, Dominican University of California ballet program graduate Alonzo King LINES has done just that.
“A lot of what you’ll find in the world of classical ballet is a monkey, monkey to do mentality, where the choreographer tells you what to do and you just repeat what he tells you and you get the approvals. The goal is usually not, who are you? Thorne told the IJ in 2013. “The way we try to work is to let that go. I am interested in what everyone in my business has to offer. My work as a director creates a safe place for them to explore their inner world and be moved from within. “
See the dance company’s latest work, a dance film, “100 Days of Dance,” at 1 pm Saturday on Zoom. Following the film’s debut, there will be a question-and-answer session with the creators at 3pm. No RSVP required for the free event. The Zoom link can be found at insideoutballet.org/news.

From muscle cars to hot rods to classic coupes, discover more than 100 vintage cars and motorcycles at Bon Air’s first showcase of vintage cars and motorcycles from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at the west end of the Bon parking lot Air in Greenbrae. This event will allow people to meet vehicle owners and exchange stories, listen to live music and check out sidewalk specials. Free entry. For more information, visit bonair.com.
