As the UDP flows, the orchestra plays!
by Rudolph A. Neal
Just when you think you can’t get past the bottom, they prove you wrong! And here I am referring to the ongoing anarchy that continues to prevail and reign supreme within the loyal opposition, the United Democratic Party. Given the most recent display of discord within the party, all will readily admit that the opposition is anything but “united”, and now the question of how “democratic” it is has been brought to the fore. This is after sparring factions within the opposition launched a recall attempt against its current party leader, who after a few days of vetting was determined by the party’s internal leadership to have failed after supposedly not fulfill the conditions required to trigger such a callback mechanism. Now whether or not he really failed is a matter of debate, but what is more evident than ever is that the United Democratic Party (UDP) is sinking, and while it is sinking, l orchestra continues to play.
This latest attempt to trigger a recall of his current party leader was monumental. It was a bold and divisive move, one that rarely happens in the complex guts of political parties. The fact that such a mechanism has been attempted twice in less than two years testifies to the strange state of disarray, dysfunction and serious discord that prevails within the UDP opposition. If I may say so, it is an absolute disgrace and disgrace and it is a cause of grave concern and concern in our country. History will remember that there were times in the past when the oppositions were weakened and had internal scuffles and skirmishes; but man, I’m telling you, this one takes the cake, hands down! And what is even more worrying is the glaring fact that this ‘failed’ attempt to trigger the recall will only further deepen the division within the party and further strain internal relations, plunging the party further into the dark and gloomy depths of cold and bitterness. abyss of the political fringes.
Now, in a heated speech with my friends, and talking about the state of affairs in our country, the horrible state in which the UDP finds itself has come to light. And one of my friends told the other that what happens in the UDP is none of our business. I didn’t agree with that, because on the contrary, what happens within the UDP is our business. They are our sworn opposition who are tasked and charged with the fiduciary responsibility of being guardians of our democracy and watchdogs of the political process by which government executes plans and manages our affairs. We therefore cannot turn a blind eye to this inability to pull themselves together and serve to the best of their abilities. It’s our business, and the opposition is failing, and it’s failing badly, and so we have to talk about it and worry about what’s going on.
When I look objectively at the state of affairs within the UDP, where it is a stable democracy as well as a viable opposition, this is not going to happen anytime soon, or in the foreseeable future. Quite frankly, I am of the opinion that the UDP will remain in opposition for a very, very long time. If my prediction is correct, based on the severe state of disunity they find themselves in and their inability to give in to each other and achieve friendly relations and make amends, the People’s United Party (PUP) in power got its second and third terms, comfortably – comfortably enough! But more than that, the way things are going, not only will the PUP win a fine second term, but the UDP, in its current state, risks losing at least 2 of the 5 seats it currently holds.
I tell you, the UDP is in a terrible, terrible state. He finds himself in treacherous waters amid perpetual furious waves that devour his party. The organization is in a state of disrepair, and the very people tasked with fixing it are warring factions with significant differences and stand in strong opposition to each other. Their former captain was recalled; there has only been a failed attempt to recall the current captain, and other crew members are sailing in various directions, while some party loyalists (past and current) have already taken off in the life rafts, with their life jackets securely fastened, not even looking at the sinking ship. And despite the gloomy prognosis for the UDP, there are some hopes, which despite the current situation, cling to this unalterable spirit which draws from this well which springs eternally. But the truth is that the days of the opposition are dark, and as the UDP sinks, the good old band keeps playing!
