Muzaffarnagar: When she was 14, Priyanka Goswami was pretty sure her life would be centered around gymnastics. She raced at school, never too seriously, but always ended up winning. Around the same time, his father, a bus driver, was suspended from his job. Things got tough at home, the racetracks offered refuge and she shifted gears. This year, 25-year-old Goswami broke the national fitness walking record and is on his way to the Tokyo Olympics. Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday called Priyanka’s life an exemplary one on ‘Mann ki Baat’.
“Priyanka Goswamiji’s life… teaches a lot… As a child, Priyanka loved the bag medalists received. It was this fascination that led her to participate in the walking competition. Now she’s a great champion, â€Modi said. The Priyanka, friend of the cameras, who has 15,000 subscribers on Instagram, was delighted. “I am delighted to hear PM Modi mention me. I will do my best to win a medal for my country, â€she said. His father, Madan Goswami, was also delighted. “I am very happy that the PM spoke about their hard work. I am convinced that my daughter will bring us a medal, â€he told TOI.
Priyanka, who has won more than 20 national medals in the 20km running race, is busy training at the Sport Authority of India national camp in Bengaluru. She has participated in international events in Italy, Japan and Taiwan. After her national record victory, covering 20 km in 1 hour 28 minutes and 45 seconds, at the 8th National Open and 4th International Walking Championships in Ranchi – 4 minutes and 56 seconds short of the international record – she heads for the Games Tokyo Olympics in August.
In a country with limited sports funding and bottlenecks at every stage, the trajectories of many of the Tokyo contingent have been strewn with obstacles. Archers Pravin Jadhav, 25, and Deepika Kumari, 27, Modi said, have not had it easy. “Pravin is from a village in Satara district in Maharashtra … His parents run the family by working as laborers,” he said. “Deepika’s father drives a rickshaw and her mother is a nurse. Deepika is now the only Indian female archer at the Tokyo Olympics. Our best wishes go to Deepika, once ranked number one in the world. Deepika captured gold in the women’s individual recurve and as part of the women’s and mixed teams at the Archery World Cup in Paris on Sunday.
The journey of Neha Goyal and that of CA Bhavani Devi, 28, has been equally inspiring. “Neha (25) is a member of the women’s hockey team heading to Tokyo. Her mother and sisters manage family expenses by working in a cycle factory, â€Modi said. “Bhavani, from Chennai, is the first Indian fencer to qualify for the Olympics … In order for Bhavani ji’s training to continue, her mother mortgaged her jewelry.”
It has been a tough walk for all of them. The suspension of Priyanka’s father was never revoked. “I urge Prime Minister Modi to help get my father’s job back,” she said. Her brother, 23, lost his job at a private company during the pandemic. It lights up. “I wake up at 4am, train from 5.30am to 9.30am, then again from 4pm to 7pm,†she said, now on a break from her day job as a junior clerk with paths Indian iron. ”
