Edgar Wright praises Annette from the Sparks Brothers: a cinematic opera

Wright may be biased because he just completed a documentary about the songwriters behind “Annette,” but his praise is still huge.

Director Edgar Wright might be biased for praising director Leos Carax’s upcoming “Annette”, as “Baby Driver” and now “One Night in Soho” filmmaker just wrapped up a documentary on the Sparks Brothers. It is the pop art music duo that completely conceived “Annette”, from its history to its songs sung by Adam Driver, Marion Cotillard, Simon Helberg and many others. But even so, his word is high on the musical whimsy of Ron and Russell Mael that will serve as this year’s Cannes Film Festival opening film (in person this time).

“When I first met Ron & Russell Mael of @sparksofficial for breakfast in 2015, they spoke excitedly about a movie they had made that hopefully would be directed by Leos Carax “, Edgar Wright said on Twitter on Thursday . “Yesterday, I saw the finished opus. It was as bold and brilliant as I had dreamed of.

He added: “’Annette’ is a cinematic opera; as wildly ambitious, funny, poignant, tragic and formally insane as you would hope for the union of Carax and Sparks. The actors, Adam Driver, Marion Cotillard, Simon Helberg, are all sublime. I can’t wait to see him again.

“Annette” is going to be a massive cinematic event on the Croisette this year, as it is the beloved Carax’s first film since “Holy Motors” took the French film festival by storm in 2012, and it also gives the kick-off of the first Cannes since 2019. The film weaves the story of a provocative comedian (Adam Driver) and his wife, a world-famous soprano (Marion Cotillard). Together, their glamorous life takes an unexpected turn when their daughter Annette is born, bringing with her a unique gift. The film is highly anticipated as it was due to premiere at the Cannes Film Festival last year, which unfortunately did not happen.

“Annette” is slated for a limited release in the United States on August 6, 2021 before airing on Amazon Prime Video on August 20.

Meanwhile, Wright’s musical “The Sparks Brothers” hits Focus Features on June 18. His elegant thriller “One Night in Soho”, starring Anya Taylor-Joy and Thomasin McKenzie, will also be released from Focus on October 22.
