EXCLUSIVE: Madhur Bhandarkar breaks silence on his struggles after Trishakti collapses: ‘I used to walk around with 50-60 coins in my pocket on the bus to call the producers. Simple jeb se coins ki awaaz aati thi. Commuters would mistake me for the bus driver!”: Bollywood News
Not many people know that Madhur Bhandarkar made his directorial debut with Trishakti (1999). Starring Arshad Warsi, Milind Gunaji and Sharad Kapoor, this action entertainer flopped at the box office due to low buzz and an unexciting star cast. In an exclusive interview with bollywood hungama the National Award-winning filmmaker got over his head talking about his struggles following that film’s debacle.
EXCLUSIVE: Madhur Bhandarkar breaks silence on his struggles after Trishakti collapses: ‘I used to walk around with 50-60 coins in my pocket on the bus to call the producers. Simple jeb se coins ki awaaz aati thi. Commuters would mistake me for the bus driver!”
Madhur Bhandarkar revealed: “(After Trishakti flopped), I traveled by bus and train. I often met the assistants or spotted boys or actors who played the henchmen in Trishakti . They would offer me their place. I would lie to them that I am traveling on the bus for research work for my next film! To get to Versova, I changed two buses.
Madhur Bhandarkar continued, “It was a time when I used to walk around with 50 to 60 coins in my pocket. I didn’t have a cell phone. It was expensive. Making an outgoing call cost Rs. 16 per minute and incoming ke bhi paise lagte le . So, I would take those coins and go to the PCO booth. I would even travel with the parts on the bus. Single jeb se c anoint ki awaaz aati thi . Commuters would mistake me for the bus driver! »
He added, “I would get off at Versova, walk to a phone booth and call the producers. I would tell them that I made a film and that I want to meet them. As I expected, the secretaries told me ‘Sahab bathroom me hate sahab so rah hai , etc. I even started calling producers of soap operas and video albums. By the time I got home, all my coins would have been sold out. It lasted a year. Then one day a friend took me to a beer bar where I got the idea to make Chandni Bar (2001). »
Chandni Bar was made on a limited budget, but it turned out to be a surprise hit. The Tabu star was also highly acclaimed by critics and made Madhur Bhandarkar a force to be reckoned with.
