Orange Symphony Orchestra back on stage at the Orange Civic Center after a two-year hiatus | West Central Daily
news, local news,
It’s been more than two years since the Orchester symphonique d’Orange took the stage, but they should make their comeback next month. OSO Returns at the Orange Civic Center on February 20 will be a celebratory event, marking the end of a string of concert cancellations due to COVID. The performance was scheduled for September last year, but was again delayed due to closures. “It’s difficult to organize an orchestra concert, because you need 50 to 60 people on stage,” said orchestra director David Shaw. “So it’s fantastic to finally get everyone together, to play together and bring this music to life.” Mr Shaw said the highlight of the upcoming concert will be a work composed specifically for the orchestra by Orange musician, teacher and composer Noel Annett, entitled Sketches of Notre Dame. The piece, which Mr Shaw said “also spent two years in the closet”, takes listeners on a journey from the renaissance to the tragic fire at the iconic cathedral in 2019. “It will be a kind of reminder of the kinds of things that shocked us in the world before COVID happened,” Shaw said. Other works in the concert include Felix Mendelssohn’s Hebrides Overture, Mozart’s Sinfonia Concertante and Beethoven’s Sixth Symphony. Carlo Antonioli, recently named Cybec Assistant Conductor Fellow of the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra for 2022, will join the orchestra as conductor. “We’re very lucky to have him. I believe his contract starts the day after our concert,” Shaw said. Tickets are on sale now on Ticketek. Our reporters work hard to provide local, up-to-date news to the community.
