Tony Hadley Didn’t Expect Spandau Ballet’s ‘True’ to Be a Hit

Former Spandau Ballet singer Tony Hadley said he didn’t expect their band’s classic song “True” to be a hit.

‘True’ gave Spandau Ballet their very first UK number one. It also reached #4 in Australia and the United States.

Tony tells Noise11.com: “I didn’t think ‘True’, for example, was a single. I don’t think any of us have. But when DJs in the UK started saying “if it’s not a single, if it’s not number one, I’m gonna eat my hat” and all that stuff, he ended up being number one in 25 countries, including Top 5 in the United States, so I was wrong”.

‘True’ is one of the three songs he always plays at every gig. “It’s still a song every time we sing it today, there are certain songs you sing every time,” he says. “Whether it’s a private show, a public show or a festival, ‘True’, ‘Gold’ and ‘Barricades’ are those three songs that we always have to do”.

This third album “True” took Spandau Ballet in a completely different direction from where they started. “It’s a little weird,” he said. “If you look at the very first album, we could have easily gone down the Depeche Mode route and been a ‘four on the floor’ kind of band. We kept changing, we got a little funky on the second album. When we released the ‘True’ album, Steve Norman was playing saxophone, percussion. This had a big influence on Gary’s writing. We went to the Bahamas ‘yo man!’, it’s all laid back there. The third album ‘True’ took on a completely different production, a kind of laid back soft rock”.

Tony Hadley begins his solo tour of Australia tonight on the Gold Coast.
